Definition
A Compound Sentence is a sentence that joins two independent clauses together with :
  1. A comma + coordinating conjunction
A coordinating conjunction is also known as a F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So).
Example :
FOR  : Let’s go to the swimming pool, for it’s hot inside the house.
AND : I want to go to the circus, and I want to ride a pony.

NOR : I have never visited Asia, nor have I ever visited Africa.
BUT  : I need to go to the store, but I’m feeling too sick to drive.
OR    : You can make a big poster, or you can make a small clay statue.
YET  : I don’t want to practice playing the violin, yet I don’t want to disobey my mother.
SO    :  I didn’t do my homework, so my parents punished me.

Remember !
Jake likes playing on the see saw.

Jake and Kelly like playing on the see saw.
(Compound Subjects)
Frankie likes eating pizza.

Frankie likes eating pizza and drinking coke.
(Compound Predicates)
Kelly likes playing on the see saw.
Frankie likes drinking coke.

2.  Semi-colon
You can also use a semicolon to create a compound sentence since the two independent clauses are equal.
Example:
The teacher applauded the class; the kids beamed with pride.
The dog ate; the cat slept.
Tom has benefited from his exercise program; he is slim and energetic.

 3. Conjunctive adverbs
  • My parents caught a severe cold; consequently, they had to cancel their vacation.
  • I like to study grammar; therefore, I love this class.
  • Bob is handsome; moreover, he is rich.
Conjunctive Adverbs “float”
Conjunctive adverbs are sometimes called “floating” adverbs because they can be positioned at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a clause.
Example :
Bob is handsome; moreover, he is rich.
Bob is handsome; he is, moreover, rich.
Bob is handsome; he is rich, moreover.
